Somewhat off topic, for which apologies beforehand.
I’m looking for source code of Plan9’s first edition. A quick search on Google came up
dry.
Would that source be publicly available? Or were the licensing restrictions such that it
only exists in non-public archives?

It's not. I asked Geoff about this when he resurrecected a
copy of the v2 sources for me. There was no "v1 release" as
such, just adhoc distributions to a few sites.
