Shortening the variable names will make it compatible with old
{n,t}roff but I'm not sure what else might be different in v1.
BTW: The mailing list currently has a 'From: <unix-jun72(a)tuhs.org>' and
'Reply-To: <unix-jun72(a)minnie.tuhs.org>' - shouldn't these be the
same?
