I also remember alt.2600. Because of my work in security I was
encouraged to keep tabs on such things (also had the government buy me a
subscription to the printed 2600).
It was set up as a moderated group, but there was no moderator. Your
right to post was derived by the fact that you knew how to forge the
approved line into the header to get it distributed.
