John,
1982 fits with John starting at UNSW in August 1972 and being eligible for 26-weeks
Sabbatical every 5 years.
The Unix Review article in 1985 was quite clear Dr Lions had been at Bell Labs twice on
Sabbatical.
Leaving the June 1979 paper mentioned by Luther Johnson to be explained. Perhaps
Recreation leave, not Sabbatical.

And John put us up when we visited Australia in 1983, so it was before that.
I'm guessing 1982, but that's just a guess.
