Hello everyone I had a problem compiling a piece of c code from the book. The result of running the book is 5050, but the compiler is 100. I don't know which is right, please help me to see which is wrong. An arguable distinction: I thought hard about claiming priority for -ms. Joe Ossanna intended option -m to foster macro packages from the outset. -man was an early use, hidden in the man command. But -man was not packaged (in the sense of being an announced feature that can be used from its external description) until v7. -ms appeared in v6. Can anyone point me to source for a lex that works on Linux?

Sort of off-topic: usefulness of TUHS list and archive?

All, sorry that this is tangential to TUHS. I work at TAFE Queensland, which is a bit like a polytechnic or a U.S college. As a teacher, I have to demonstrate industry skills. I've listed my administration of the TUHS server over 25+ years. However, TAFE wants this to be verified by third parties: "Where possible the teacher could show that industry endorses his website and any if there are any testimonials/comments/reviews available on the site, these could also be provided." So, if you could pop a sentence or two in reply to this e-mail about the usefulness of the TUHS archive and the mailing list, that would be really helpful! Cheers & thanks in advance, Warren

Decades ago I made my prompt simply end with a newline, which perfectly and cleanly solves the problem of making it easy to copy and paste a whole line by multiple clicking in a terminal emulator to select the line, or by using line oriented commands in an emacs shell (or moving to the line and hitting return, which Emacs often regularly fucks up with its idiotic kludges to identify the prompt with invisible marks and regular expressions), without injecting any garbage characters into the beginning of the command line or requiring any extra mouse clicks, precision cursor targeting, or extra keystrokes. Using “;” or any other character as a prompt is an ugly hack, and doesn’t solve the problem thoroughly or cleanly. No matter what character you use as a prompt at the beginning of the line, it’s going to cause some problems, like semicolons building up each time you re-enter the line, or conflicts with built-in shell syntax (retch!), so the only logical (and most obvious) solution is not to use any characters at the beginning of the line at all, and just put the prompt on a line above on its own. There is no downside to that, unless it somehow offends your sense of aesthetics. (In which case you should get over it.) That’s the cleanest solution without any unpleasant side effects. I don’t understand why that solution isn’t the first thing shell users think of, and the default used by the shell — it’s so obvious. Hi, I usually just lurk on this list, but I've been curious lately about the origin of the symbols at the end of various interactive prompts. ksh (etc), bash, sh use $ for non-root, and # for root csh, tcsh and zsh use % for non-root and # for root fish and things like mysql, ftp, and interactive shells for a lot of scripting languages use > rc uses ; Where do these different conventions originate? In Memoriam: Edsger Dijkstra, and happy birthday Jon Postel!

What a weird day... We lost computer pioneer Edsger Dijkstra in 2002; he gave us ALGOL, structured programming, semaphores, and ranted against the GOTO statement (much to the distress of the Fortranites and their spaghetti coding). A tangential connection to early Unix experience: My collection of early computer manuals includes Brinch Hansen's manual for the RC 4000, which stands out for its precise description of the CPU logic--in Algol 60! It's the only manual I have seen that offers a good-to-the-last-bit formal description of the hardware. DEC presented something of the sort for the PDP-11, but punted where the woods got thick. When I wanted to know how they computed the last bit of floating-point results, I got no satisfaction. Amidst a thorough description of addressing came this formulation of the actual computation: "form floating point result". Doug

Why would anyone be interested in an old regex package that never was a part of any Unix distro? The driving force was Posix, whose regex spec was quite inscrutable. Could there be a reference implementation? It was easy to fool every implementation I could get my hands on, including Gnu's over-the-top 9000-line implementation. But as I got into it, I got fascinated by regexes per se. In making a recognizer, there's a tradeoff between contruction time and execution time. Linear execution can be achieved, but at a potentially exponential cost in construction time (and space). Backreferencing takes the regex languages out of the class of regular languages. Recalling that regular languages are closed under intersection and negation, I wondered about how to implement new regex operators, & and -. I came up with a scheme for this optional non-Posix feature that involved layering continuation-passing over more traditional methods. And while I was at it, I broke out smaller sublanguages for special treatment (as does Gnu), all the way down to Knuth-Morris-Pratt for expressions in which the only operation is catenation. And finally, having followed the development of C++ from its infancy, I wanted to try out its new template facility, so there's a bit of that in the package, too. Arnold has discovered that not only has C++ evolved, but also that without the discipline of -Wall to force clean code, I was rather cavalier about casting, both explicitly and implicitly. The only real customer the code ever had was the AST project, which translated it to C. After the C++ had sat idle for a half-dozen years, I thought to revive it in Linux, but found it riddled with incompatibilities with that new environment and gave up. Arnold deserves a citation for bravery in pushing that through 15 years further on. Doug

In Memoriam: Per Brinch Hansen

[ I've always posted these to TUHS with no objections, so I have no idea whether COFF would be a better forum; feel free to spank me (I might even enjoy it!) ] We lost Per Brinch Hansen, a computer scientist, on this day in 2007. He specialised in operating systems and concurrent programming, and wrote the classic book "Operating System Principles" which was published in six languages for decades. He also wrote another book "The Architecture of Concurrent Programs" which demonstrated an entire operating system written in Concurrent Pascal (much like the Lions' books on Unix). -- Dave
