I am definitely not one of the brighter people on this list, but I am an
Emacs user.
The reason why is very simple.
I was introduced to Unix systems the summer I was 17, when I was working in
a physics lab at UT Austin. There were computers there I needed to use.
One of the other people in the lab, when I was like, "how do I write a
program?" was like, "OK, type 'emacs' and hit return, then type Ctrl-h
then
t".
So I did.
Decades later, here I still am.

I like the joke about EMACS being an acronym for

Mine, I think (and I hadn't seen it before).
