Although I edited the v7 through v10 manuals, I have no recollection of why  "system" crept into the title between v7 and v8. Resistance to trademark edicts did grow. In v10, the cover and the man pages proclaimed "Unix". However, the fossilized spelling, "UNIX", still appeared in the introduction to Volume 1 and scattered throughout Volume 2.
