That's might be true for bwk's and Pike's stuff, but not Rich Steven's or Comer's books.   I know for fact that Rich had a set of macro's (based originally on -ms) and a set of integrated makefiles to build his texts.  I was under the impression he passed them to a number of people, not just people like me.
