This page lists non-VAX-hardware-related 4.3BSD-Quasijarus features, i.e.,
UNIX system features first developed by Quasijarus Project.
For VAX hardware support information, see the
VAX hardware support page.
Features First Appeared in 4.3BSD-Quasijarus0a
- The SCCS commands now come standard with the system.
Previously every user had to install them him/herself as "local" software.
4.3BSD-* is very different from PWB/UNIX, and taking SCCS out of the latter and
shoehorning it into the former is no easy task. Berkeley had done this back in
the early 1980s, but this is the first time that work comes standard with the
system instead of lurking somewhere in Berkeley's /usr/src/local.
- The distribution mechanism has been modified so that the same standard
distribution tape can be used for all machines.
Whereas previously one had to construct a special tape to bootstrap a MicroVAX,
now MicroVAXen are bootstrapped from the standard distribution tape, the same
one used for large VAXen.
- Strong compression has been added.
